I really believe (hope?) that people are realizing how ignorant we are and how that affects things. Because we have been able to get a pay-check and a tee-time, we haven't worried about the exploitation of the country at the hands of our "leaders." I think we're heading for hard times where we HAVE to raise taxes to pay for the war and the irresponsibility of having only five of the last 47 federal budgets in the black. The nation will see the same trap that a lot of households are seeing--will the government eventually have to go on bended knee to the neighborhood (meaning Shanghai, Tokyo, or Abu Dhabi) payday lender only to get further trapped?

Let hope the next President has the grit to face the facts and make hard decisions, stepping on well-shod toes if necessary to preserve the relative prosperity of the nation. Otherwise, we will go bankrupt.

“We pray . . . that those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibilities; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; that the scourges of poverty, disease and ignorance will be made to disappear from the earth, and that, in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love.”

What a beautiful statement! What a great reminder of what should be America's role in the world should be. I'll have to find the movie and watch it.

“ . . . we – you and I, and our government – must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without asking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage.”

This is another situation we can do something about, but only if we have the willingness to control our lust for power and thirst for luxury. We must, must, must hold our elected officials responsible for the way they spend our money.

"Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

This is something that we can improve in the next generation. We must do it or the situation will continue to deteriorate and we, as a people, will continue to be easily deceived and convinced to buy into the falsehoods perpetuated by those who want to control the system and the economy.

What an interesting piece! He was likely the last statesman-president.

I'll make the first comment: see http://www.huffingtonpost.com/nathan-gardels/stiglitz-on-mccain-if-he_b_89825.html. It's an interview with 2001 Nobel laureate for Economics, Joe Stiglitz, about the financing of the war in Iraq, and how it is completely intertwined with the domestic economic failure of the Bush administration.
