The other problem with the way campaign finance reform is set up is that it allows the media to have a disproportionate influence on the election. The media can say anything they want, anytime they want about the candidates, all the way up to the election. The private citizen is at a distinct disadvantage in supporting her candidate. Groups of citizens are at a disadvantage. This would be okay if the media were actually disinterested and unbiased, however they are not. CNN with its left-leaning bias and Fox with its right-leaning bias control a lot of the information about candidates, in effect diminishing the freedom of speech.

The argument put forward by conservatives is that McCain-Feingold limits free speech. I agree. However, there has to be a way to limit the influence that the money has. Robert Reich proposed that all the money go into a blind trust so that the candidates don't know from whom the money has come. I think I posted a comment somewhere about it.

Digging WAY back to a post from March of last year--Barack Obama has offered to make an agreement with John McCain to limit and control compaign contributions in the Presidential race (http://blogs.usatoday.com/oped/2008/02/opposing-view-3.html). I really hope McCain steps up and takes the challenge. It would be a great thing for the country to have limits and transparency on campaign contributions to see who wants to pull the candidates' strings once he's in office.
